First UK edition, first print hardback of EDIBLE FUNGI, by John Ramsbottom - Keeper of Botany British Museum (Natural History) and illustrated by Rose Ellenby. Published by Penguin Books Limited, London in 1943. King Penguin edition.The book is in very good condition (Clean Decorated paper covered boards with black lettering on spine and on front) with only slight wear (very slight tanning and only minor rubbing around the spine corners). No dust jacket. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears. There is a previous owner's small inscription on the bottom of the front end page and minor tanning to the pages.
The King Penguin series launched in 1939 and continued for twenty years, published 76 volumes in total. They were pocket sized hardback books with a brief text followed by full page and coloured illustrations. These small picture books were designed to provide a brief introduction to a subject. The King Penguin Editions provided an attractive, and accessible, miniature series on subjects ranging from British culture, natural history, fine arts and design, to the book arts. Now very collectable.
EDIBLE FUNGI is the 13th book in the Series. Introduced during the outbreak of World War Two, when the possibility of using edible fungi to add variety to the wartime diet was considered, stimulated by the presence of foreigners from many lands where the eating of fungi is customary.
Small format. 35 pages & 16 full page colour plates. Illustrated with several simple line drawings within the text.
