John Laffin DAMN THE DARDANELLES First Edition Gallipoli

First edition, first print hardback of DAMN THE DARDANELLES!: The Story of Gallipoli by John Laffin, published by Osprey Publishing Limited, London, in 1980.

The book is in very good condition (Clean brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine), with slight wear to the illustrated dust jacket which is not price clipped (light creasing to edges, minor rubbing to a couple of corners, a thumbnail closed tear to the bottom corner of the spine and minor tanning inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Australian John Laffin was one of the worlds most distinguished military historians. Both of Johns parents served with the Australian Imperial Force during WW1. His father was an infantry officer, and his mother a nursing sister.

In WW2 John served for five years in the second AIF and was a veteran of the New Guinea campaign. he is the author of Digger, Western Front 1916-17 and 1917-18, British Butchers & Bunglers of W.W.I, Digging up the Diggers War, We Will Remember Them, Guide to the Australian Battlefields of the Western Front 1916-1918, On the Western Front: Soldiers Stories 1914-1918, World War 1 in Postcards, Anzacs at War, and The Australian Army at War 1899- 1975.

"Controversy still rages today about the Gallipoli campaign, inspired by Winston Churchill and designed to knock Turkey out of the First World War, thereby opening a supply route to arms-starved Russia. Was it one of the greatest blunders of the war, misconceived from the start? Or was it a strategic masterstroke, ruined by incompetence on the spot? Whichever view is accepted, the campaign was of decisive importance, for its failure opened the way to the collapse of the Russian army and the eventual revolution.

Damn the Dardanelles! is much more than just another account of the action in the field. John Laffin is in the unique position of having access to hitherto unpublished material and illustrations, and this, coupled with an intimate knowledge of the Gallipoli peninsula, has inspired him to write a critical and challenging analysis of the whole campaign. He examines the premises on which it was conceived, the way it was executed, the personalities of the leaders and the conflicts between them.

In his introduction John Laffin says: 'The purpose of this book is to explain the defeat, to apportion the blame, and to let the soldiers speak. Damn the Dardanelles! provides a fascinating new treatment of a subject which, sixty-five years after the event, continues to exert a powerful grip over the imaginations of people throughout the world."
