John Glover WEST MIDLANDS RAILS IN THE 1980s Ian Allan
First edition, first print hardback of WEST MIDLANDS: RAILS IN THE 1980s, by John Glover and published by Ian Allan Ltd in 1984.The book is in good condition with some wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (bit of rubbing and creasing to edges, one or two chips, small piece hanging off at the top of the spine, light bumping to corners). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
The West Midlands is at the heart of British Rail's operations in more ways than one, with Birmingham New Street being the single most important InterCity station in the country, and with trunk rail routes radiating to all parts of Britain. Here the AC electric system of the London Midland Region meets the High Speed Trains on the North-East-South-West route and lesser services from elsewhere, to say nothing of the extensive local rail network operated on behalf of the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive. A broad definition of the West Midlands has been assumed, which takes in an area roughly 30 miles in radius from its Birmingham centre. Many secondary services are thus included and, of course, freight traffic everywhere. A notable feature of the area is the availability of alternative routes, and a special section has been included on Excursions and Diversions.
John Glover has put together an attractive and informative book designed to provide a comprehensive photgraphic guide to the railways of the area in the early 1980s. All sectors of the railway business are represented, and a short introduction precedes each section of the book.
104 pages, profusely illustrated with black and white photographs.
