First illustrated edition hardback of SUMMONED BY BELLS by John Betjeman with illustrations by Hugh Casson and published by John Murray in 1989. Signed and dated by Casson on the half title page. Previous owner inscription to front endpaper. The book is in very good condition (green cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with light bumping to the bottom corners of the front and back boards (which have faded to yellow in places) and light age spotting to the top page edges. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket that has light creasing here and there and a thumbnail closed tear to the top corner of the back cover. Internally, the pages are clean and tight.
John Betjeman's verse autobiography has sold more copies than any other English poem of its length in this century. The touching story of a boy's growth to early manhood and the mixed joys and guilt of youth, it is also supremely a poem about places, buildings, and surroundings - Highgate and Pooterland, the Cornish seaside and Chelsea, Marlborough among its downs, the quads of Oxford, churches and tin advertisements on railway platforms.
Who better to illustrate this autobiography than Hugh Casson, architect and former President of the Royal Academy, who has already endeared us with illustrated books on London and Oxford which show him to be just as much in love with those places as Betjeman himself.
He has delighted in Summoned by Bells since it first appeared and his illustrations in line and water-colour are a perfect complement to the verse.
