Joan Fleming THE MAN FROM NOWHERE First Edition
First edition, first print hardback of THE MAN FROM NOWHERE by Joan Fleming and published by Collins for The Crime Club in 1960.The book is in good condition (red boards and black lettering on spine). The dust jacket, which is not price clipped (10s. 6d. net) is protected behind a mylar-type sleeve, which cannot easily be removed. It appears the dust jacket is in pretty good condition, with some rubbing/fraying to the top and bottom of the spine, one thumbnail closed tear at the bottom of the front cover and some bumping to the corners. It is difficult to see whether the jacket or the inside of the protective sleeve is soiled. There is what looks like the remains of a sticker on the front jacket cover. All text on the jacket is still intact and the colours appear unfaded. Internally, the pages are for the most part clean, with a little age spotting/browning here and there. The binding is tight with no loose pages, although there are some light creases in the top corners of some pages to mark a reader's place. There are no tears and no inscriptions. Some discolouration/tanning to page edges.
He came to Stargill one blustery afternoon in October. He was wearing a raincoat like any other and carrying a shabby canvas grip. The Man from Nowhere settled in the village, got work in the saw-mill and was gradually accepted by the inhabitants as a friend. But it was this man who was to discover the battered body of old Ma Perkins lying in the stream, and, when it became obvious that the murderer could only be someone in the village, the ranks began to close up. He was, after all, a stranger in Stargill. Kind, good company and likeable but, for all that, a 'foreigner'. When the murder was followed by another violent and bloody death the village became frightened, suspicious and cruel. The urge to protect, at all costs, its own security and peace of mind became imperative.Joan Fleming has been acclaimed as one of the outstanding Crime novelists of her time. With The Man From Nowhere she has not only written a Crime novel which broke new ground but told a haunting, powerful story with deceptive simplicity and great skill. This is a book you will remember.
