Jim Collins GOOD TO GREAT First Edition
First UK edition, first print hardback of GOOD TO GREAT : Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't, by Jim Collins and published by Random House Business Books, London, in 2001.The book is in very good condition (clean black boards and gold lettering on spine) with only minor shelf wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (only minor creasing to edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is a little creasing to the last three pages (Index pages and end paper, but nothing too drastic). Also, there is a very small area in the top corner of the title page where something has been erased, but again nothing at all drastic.
Built to Last was a phenomenal success: 'It is a fair assumption that as the seminal importance of this book begins to permeate the upper echelons of business and business schools... Collins and Porras will emerge as the gurus to watch over the next decade.' The Director. Good to Great explores a whole new concept, backed by the same research standards that caused Built to Last to have such a lasting impact. In 1996, Jim Collins and his research team set out to answer one simple question: 'Can a good company become a great company and, if so, how?' Most great companies grew with superb parents - founders like George Merck, David Packard, and Walt Disney - who instilled the seeds of greatness early on. But what about the vast majority of companies that wake up part way through life and realize that they're good, but not great?
With 21 research associates working in groups of four to six at a time over a period of nearly five years, the study involved a wide range of both qualitative and quantitative analyses and examined 1435 Fortune 500 companies.
And what did Collins and his team discover? They found the key concepts that permitted these good-to-great companies to achieve cumulative stock returns 6.9 times the stock market in fifteen years. Rigorously supported by evidence, his findings are surprising - at times even shocking - to the modern mind.
Good to Great achieves a rare distinction : a management book full of vital ideas that reads as well as a fast-paced novel.
