Jean Plaidy THE PASSIONATE ENEMIES First Edition

First edition, first print hardback of THE PASSIONATE ENEMIES by Jean Plaidy and published by Robert Hale & Company, London, in 1976. The third and final book in The Norman Trilogy.

The book is in very good condition (clean maroon cloth boards and gilt lettering on the spine) with minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is price clipped (minor creasing to edges, fingernail tear to the top corner of the spine and a small brown mark on the first few front page ends). Internally, the pages are clean and tight, there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Eleanor Hibbert (19061993), whose most well known pseudonym was Jean Plaidy, was one of the preeminent authors of historical fiction for most of the twentieth century. She wrote about 200 historical novels, most of them under the pen name Jean Plaidy.

She chose to use various names because of the differences in subject matter between her books; the best-known, apart from Plaidy, are Victoria Holt and Philippa Carr.

"The King's son had gone down in the White Ship and the country was without an heir. His nephew, Stephen, was hopeful that the crown might fall to him, but Henry I decided to marry again.

Anxious eyes were directed towards the royal marriage, but the new Queen was barren. The King already had a daughter, Matilda, who was married to the German Emperor. While her husband lived she could not become Queen of England but still she hoped. When Henrywas alive none dared go against his wishes but after the fatal supper of lampreys, circumstances changed.

Who was the true heir to the throne? The King had commanded that his daughter, Matilda, after her husband, the Emperor, was believed to be dead, should receive the oath of allegiance from his subjects; but there were some who said that the King had changed his mind on his death-bed.

This is the story of conflict between two people of widely differing characters but who were obsessed by each other. Their lives were torn by love and hatred. They were the passionate enemies."
