First BCA edition, first print hardback of THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR, by Jean M. Auel and published by Book Club Associates/Guild Publishing, London, in 1985. It states CN 4109 on the back flap. Jacket painting by Barbara Lofthouse.The book is in very good condition (clean beige boards with gold lettering which has minor creasing to the spine edges) with only minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped and protected in a plastic cover. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
Jean M. Auel is best known for her Earth's Children books, a series of novels set in prehistoric Europe that explores interactions of Cro-Magnon people with Neanderthals. As of 2010 her books have sold over 45 million copies worldwide. By 1990, Auel's first three books in her Earth's Children series The Clan of the Cave Bear(1980), The Valley of Horses (1982), The Mammoth Hunters (1985) sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and had been translated into 18 languages. The fourth and fifth books are The Plains of Passage (1990), The Shelters of Stone ( 2002). By May 2002, on the cusp of the publication of the fifth book, the series had sold 34 million books. The sixth and final book in the series, The Land of Painted Caves, was published in 2011. The Clan of the Cave Bear was nominated for numerous literary awards, including an American Booksellers Association nomination for best first novel. It was also later adapted into a screenplay for the film of the same name.
