Jane Robinson is a writer and lecturer who specialises in history witnessed by women. Her popular books on women travellers ( Wayward Women, Unsuitable for Ladies, Angels of Albion, and Parrot pie for breakfast) have established her as a scholarly social historian with an appreciative eye for eccentricity.
"Throughout history there has been a significant minority of women who sidestepped restraint and raised the eyebrows of their contemporaries, choosing to make an unusually independent way through life. This book is the enthralling story, rich with anecdotes and first-hand testimonies, of just some of them, as they struggled and succeeded in many fields thought to be the exclusive province of men.
The pedigree of the career woman is usually supposed to have begun with those late-victorian pioneers who stormed the bastions of male professions. Jane Robinson looks back over some 25 centuries to prove that theory quite wrong. The hundred or so women portrayed here were busy behind the scenes of recorded history, in the course of earning an honest (though in some cases perhaps not entirely honest) living. Their enterprise and flair led them into careers as diverse as they are improbable, ranging from engineers, plumbers and surgeons, to naval commander in the Persian Wars, a Dark-Age pope, a successful Orcadian wind-seller, some pirates, a Royal Marine and a stockbroker who ran for president of the United States of America.
This entertaining history is a tribute to an inspirational body of women whose significance has to long been ignored."
