James Forrester is the fiction-writing persona (the middle names) of the historian, Dr Ian J. F. Mortimer. He was born in Kent in 1967 and educated at Eastbourne College, the University of Exeter and University College London.

As Ian Mortimer he has pioneered a number of new literary forms in history, from writing guidebooks for those 'visiting' the past - The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England to a day-by-day account of a king over a particular year (1415: Henry V's Year of Glory) and The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England, now a major BBC 2 TV series.

He has also published essays about the nature of history, scholarly articles and books, historical biographies and poetry. Ian Mortimer was awarded the Alexander Prize by the Royal Historical Society for his work on the social history of medicine.

As James Forrester he breaks away from the constraints of historical fact and throws himself enthusiastically into fiction, using his imagination freely to tell stories within a well-researched historical social setting. His Elizabethan era Clarenceux Trilogy novels include: Sacred Treason, The Roots of Betrayal, and The Final Sacrament.

"December 1563: England is a troubled nation. Catholic plots against the young Queen Elizabeth have left the country in a state of fear and suspicion.

Late one night, the respected herald William Harley, known to all as Clarenceux King of Arms, receives an unexpected visitor. It is his fellow Catholic, Henry Machyn. Machyn is desperate for Clarenceux to hide a manuscript he possesses. It soon becomes apparent that it contains a secret so dangerous, their lives are at stake.

Not long afterwards, Clarenceux is visited by the State in the form of Francis Walsingham and his ruthless enforcer, Richard Crackenthorpe. His peaceful life is immediately shattered. If he and his family are to survive the violence of Walsinghams pursuit, he must untangle the meaning hidden in the chronicle.

On the run, and with the aid of Machyns wife Rebecca, Clarenceux is chased through underground chambers and city streets as he struggles to solve the clues in the chronicle. Yet the more light they shed on the mystery, the more terror overtakes their world. Beaten, tortured, and hunted-down, they realise that what they have in their possession could tear the whole country apart.

Bringing to life the sights, sounds, thoughts and fears of sixteenth-century London, SACRED TREASON tells a thrilling story of murder, betrayal and loyalty - and the power of the written word."
