First UK limited edition, first print hardback of CHEZ MAX, by Jakob Arjouni. Translated from the German by Anthea Bell. Published by No Exit Press in 2009. Signed by Arjouni on a specially printed front endpaper inside a Limited Edition frame, this being number 301 of 500 signed copies. With full numberline 2 4 6 8 10 9 7 5 3 1 on the copyright page.

The book is in near fine condition (Clean red cloth boards with silver lettering on the spine) with only minor shelf wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.

Jakob Arjouni was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1964, the son of acclaimed German playwright Hans Gunter Michelson. He was only 20 when his first bestselling crime novel was published and he is the author of numerous other books, including Magic Hoffmann (1996), shortlisted for the IMPAC Award, and Chez Max (2006), an original and thoughtful fictional response to 9/11.

But it is for his series of five mysteries featuring Turkish immigrant detective Kemal Kayankaya - Happy Birthday, Turk! (Filmed by Doris Dörrie); More Beer; One Man, One Murder (Winner of the German Crime Fiction Prize); Kismet and Brother Kemal - that he has become best known.

Translated in 23 countries, his books have sold over 1 million copies worldwide and his work both inside the crime genre and beyond makes Jakob Arjouni a formidable figure in modern German literature.

Sadly Arjouni died from pancreatic cancer in January 2013, aged just 48.

"Provoked by the events of 9/11 and the US reaction, Jakob Arjouni has written a clever and satirical novel focusing on a state intelligence officer and the workings of mass hysteria.

2064 - Securely fenced off from the rest of the world, life in Euroasia, except for a handful of suicide bombings and border disputes, is constantly improving. On the other side of the fence, countries are being exploited and wracked by regression, dictatorship, and religious fanaticism. People live in poverty and misery.

Max Schwartzwald is the owner of Chez Max, a smart Parisian restaurant, but he is also an Ashcroft agent, a member of a secret government organisation whose mission is to promptly identify and weed out anything that may threaten the political status quo.

Schwartzwald's biggest problem is his Ashcroft partner, Chen Wu, a self-righteous loudmouth, who leaves no taboo unbroken, attacks every human weakness and takes liberties at will - all because of the spectacular successes he has achieved within the organisation.

But is Chen a double agent who is bringing illegal immigrants into the Euroasian world and is this the opportunity for Max to get rid of his partner once and for all?"
