Iain M. Banks has been acclaimed as the most imaginative British novelist of his generation. Born in Scotland in 1954, Banks pursued a variety of careers before turning to writing. The child of a naval officer and a former professional ice skater, he studied English at Stirling University while working as a construction worker and gardener, among other jobs.

After taking a degree, he hitchhiked throughout Europe and Morocco before spending a year as a testing technician for British Steel. Over the late 1970's and early '80s, Banks visited the United States, worked for IBM in Scotland and moved to London to stay with friends while writing his first novel The Wasp Factory (1984), which concerns a sixteen-year-old serial killer. Banks came to widespread and controversial public notice with the publication of this first novel.

He has since gained enormous popular and critical acclaim for both his mainstream and his science fiction novels.

His first science fiction novel, Consider Phlebas, was published in 1987. He has continued to write both mainstream fiction (as Iain Banks) and science fiction (as Iain M. Banks).

He is now acclaimed as one of the most powerful, innovative and exciting writers of his generation: The Guardian has called him "the standard by which the rest of SF is judged". William Gibson, the New York Times-bestselling author of Spook Country describes Banks as a "phenomenon".

Feersum Endjinn won a British Science Fiction Association Award in 1994. It was Banks' second science fiction novel not based upon or set within the Culture universe.

"Count Sessine is about to die for the very last time ...

Chief Scientist Gadfium is about to receive the mysterious message she has been waiting for from the Plain of Sliding Stones ...

And Bascule the Teller, in search of an ant, is about to enter the chaos of the crypt ...

And everything is about to change ...

For this is the time of the Encroachment and, although the dimming sun still shines on the vast, towering walls of Serehfa Fastness, the end is close at hand. The King knows it, his closest advisers know it, yet still they prosecute the war against the clan Engineers with increasing savagery.

The crypt knows it too; so an emissary has been sent, an emissary who holds the key to all their futures."

'Dazzlingly original.' Daily Mail

'An exquisitely riotous tour de force of the imagination which writes its own rules simply for the pleasure of breaking them.' Time Out

'Sharp, witty, comprehensively terrifying.' Observer

'Banks is a phenomenon: the wildly successful, fearlessly creative author of brilliant and disturbing non-genre novels, he's equally at home writing pure science fiction of a peculiarly gnarly energy and elegance.' William Gibson

279 pages.
