First edition, first print hardback of FEERSUM ENDJINN, by Iain M. Banks and published by Orbit/Little, Brown & Company, London, in 1994.The book is in very good condition (Clean black cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine) with only minor shelf wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is some tanning to the pages and foxing to top page edges.
Iain M. Banks has been acclaimed as the most imaginative British novelist of his generation. Born in Scotland in 1954, Banks pursued a variety of careers before turning to writing. The child of a naval officer and a former professional ice skater, he studied English at Stirling University while working as a construction worker and gardener, among other jobs.
After taking a degree, he hitchhiked throughout Europe and Morocco before spending a year as a testing technician for British Steel. Over the late 1970's and early '80s, Banks visited the United States, worked for IBM in Scotland and moved to London to stay with friends while writing his first novel The Wasp Factory (1984), which concerns a sixteen-year-old serial killer. Banks came to widespread and controversial public notice with the publication of this first novel.
He has since gained enormous popular and critical acclaim for both his mainstream and his science fiction novels.
His first science fiction novel, Consider Phlebas, was published in 1987. He has continued to write both mainstream fiction (as Iain Banks) and science fiction (as Iain M. Banks).
He is now acclaimed as one of the most powerful, innovative and exciting writers of his generation: The Guardian has called him "the standard by which the rest of SF is judged". William Gibson, the New York Times-bestselling author of Spook Country describes Banks as a "phenomenon".
Feersum Endjinn won a British Science Fiction Association Award in 1994. It was Banks' second science fiction novel not based upon or set within the Culture universe.
