Honore de Balzac PERE GORIOT Franklin Library

Leatherbound hardback of PERE GORIOT, by Honore de Balzac and published by The Franklin Library in 1980. Illustrated by Albert Lynch.

The book is in near fine condition (clean blue boards with gilt decoration, gilt lettering to spine and gilt page edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is a tiny bit of fading to the gilt in the top corner of the front board and a few flecks to the page edges, all very minimal.

Pere Goriot is the tragic story of a father whose obsessive love for his two daughters leads to his financial and personal ruin. Interwoven with this theme is the story of Rastignac, who has come to Paris from the provinces to make his fortune, who befriends Goriot and becomes involved with the daughters. The story is set against the background of a largely corrupt society driven by ambition and greed.
