First edition first print hardback of THE CHARIOT OF ISRAEL (Britain, America and the State of Israel) by Harold Wilson and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson Ltd/Michael Joseph Ltd in 1981. Signed and dated by Wilson on the title page above a gift inscription by a previous owner.The book is in very good- condition (black cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with no more than light general wear to the boards although there is age-related blotching to several pages (p118-p150) and age spotting to the top pages edges. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has no more than light general storage and handling wear. Internally the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions apart from those already mentioned.
Beginning with the thirty-year background to the Balfour Declaration, Sir Harold shows how British policy vacillated over the question of the establishment of an independent Jewish homeland - even after the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust.
