Folio edition, first print slipcased hardback of HANS ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES, by Hans Christian Andersen. Published by the Folio Society, London, in 1995. 16 colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations by W. Heath Robinson.The book is in very good condition (Bound in full cloth. Set in Scotch Roman. Gilt decoration and gilt lettering on red boards and on spine with red top page ends) with a little wear (slight rubbing to gilt lettering and decoration on spine and a light moisture stain to the back board). In its original red slipcase which is in good condition with some light wear (three or four slight bumping marks, a few small light stains, slight rubbing to the corners and a one-inch split to the top edge near the corner, otherwise sturdy). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There are a couple of pages with folded corners.
Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Hans Christian Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his storiescalled eventyr, or "fairy-tales"express themes that transcend age and nationality. Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. They have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films.
Hans Christian Andersen wrote his fairy tales between 1835 and 1872. The fairy tales were first published in Danish from 1835 onwards, and in English from 1846. The text of this edition is taken from a selection of the fairy tales illustrated by William Heath Robinson and published by Constable & Co. Ltd in 1913.
