Geoffrey Willans Ronald Searle HOW TO BE TOPP First Edition 1954

First edition first print hardback of HOW TO BE TOPP: A Guide To Sukcess For Tiny Pupils, Including All There Is To Kno About Space, by Geoffrey Willans and with illustrations by Ronald Searle. Published by Max Parrish and Co. Ltd. in 1954. Previous owner's signature to half title page.

The book is in very good condition (maroon cloth boards with gilt lettering and illustration to spine) with slight creasing to spine edges, a small area of heavy rubbing around a dent to the top edge of the front board. The book is in a good unclipped dust jacket which has some chipping, creasing and tears to edges and corners and some tanning and foxing inside. Internally the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

Nigel Molesworth is a fictional character, the supposed author of a series of books about life in an English prep school named St Custard's. The books were written by Geoffrey Willans, with cartoon illustrations by Ronald Searle. The Molesworth books were the result of an approach by Willans to the cartoonist Searle, to illustrate a series of books based on a column he had been writing for Punch. 'How to be Topp' is the follow-up to 'Down With Skool!' (Max Parrish, 1953).

All skools make some sort at teaching the pupils things and the headmaster pin up a huge timetable of lessons ect. which make the heart sink when you look at it.

Nigel Molesworth is back, this time taking the tinies in hand and showing that they can survive the first term as long as you avoid the prefects and show all due respect to Molesworth 1. Back to Skool might be particularly hard on Mater and Pater, but think of those poor new bugs, forced to be their best at Latin, English, foopball and French (Armand in his striped shirt and feeble questions). Just follow his timeless advice, however, and you too could be Topp.
