Geoff Duke IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION Signed Limited Edition

First edition, first print hardback of IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION by Geoff Duke and published by Osprey Publishing Limited, London in 1988. Signed by Duke on the Chapter page of 'How It All Began' and numbered 43/500. Also included is a letter signed by Duke which states that the signature in the book is genuine.

The book is in very good condition (black cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with some wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (creasing around top and bottom edges, front and back, tiny piece missing from the front inner flap). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

Geoff Duke (1923-2015) - one of motorcycling's all-time greats of the post-war decade. World champion six times, Duke raced the best - Norton, Gilera, BMW - against the best - Maseru, Surtees, Hailwood. And he was there at the birth of the Japanese manufacturers' domination of the world two-wheel scene.

In his easy style, Duke reveals for the first time what drove him in the pursuit of perfection and ultimately to the victor's laurels. He recounts his early years as an army dispatch rider, then on to BSA recovering from the shock of war. Nortons gave him his first Isle of Man TT wins, and his years with Gilera brought him even greater success.

Winning the RAC Segrave Trophy following his Manx triumphs was the key to racing Aston Martins. The experts judged that, as a driver, he was the greatest loss of his generation to British motor sport when he returned to his first love the motorcycle Grand Prix circuit.

But Duke was also intensely involved in the technical development of motor bikes. He saw the value of disc brakes at a time when others dismissed the idea, and made contributions in every aspect of racing - aerodynamics, chassis and suspension, carburation, and even race circuit design. Yet, throughout his career, he always remained a true sportsman.

Among his many firsts was the introduction of one-piece racing leathers. It is a fascinating story - who would have predicted that masking tape could shave seconds off your practice times?

190 pages, including a list of World Championship Grands Prix and his placings, profusely illustrated with black & white photographs
