Frank Herbert CHAPTER HOUSE DUNE First Edition

First UK edition, first print hardback of CHAPTER HOUSE DUNE, by Frank Herbert and published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., London in 1985.

The book is in very good condition (Clean brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine) with minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is price clipped (light creasing to the edges and slight rubbing to the top spine corner, a very small light liquid stain on the bottom spine edge inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is slight tanning to the pages.

Frank Herbert (1920-86) was born in Tacoma, Washington and worked as a reporter and later editor of a number of West Coast newspapers before becoming a full-time writer. His first SF story was published in 1952 but he achieved fame more than ten years later with the publication in Analog of 'Dune World' and 'The Prophet of Dune' that were amalgamated in the novel Dune in 1965. Dune itself is the 'best-selling science fiction novel of all time,' and the series is widely considered to be among the classics in the genre.

Some critics assert that Herbert is responsible for bringing in a new branch of ecological science fiction. He had a personal interest in world ecology, and consulted with the governments of Vietnam and Pakistan about ecological issues.

The epic that began with the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning classic DUNE continues . . .Chapterhouse: Dune is the last in Frank Herbert series of six Dune novels. The book ends in a cliff-hanger which, with Herbert's death in 1986, leaves some overarching plotlines of the series unresolved. Two decades later, Herbert's son Brian Herbert, along with Kevin J. Anderson, published two sequels Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007) based on notes left behind by Frank Herbert for what he referred to as Dune 7, his own planned seventh novel in the Dune series.

"After the events described in Heretics of Dune, the old-established galactic order is in disarray. The ruthless Honoured Matres are conquering all; the planet Dune has been destroyed; only pockets of resistance remain, with opposition coming mainly from the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, co-ordinated from their still-undiscovered home world, Chapter House.

Now, on Chapter House, a new Scattering being planned, with Bene Gesserit women fleeing to all parts of the galaxy to guard against possible extinction at the hands of the Honoured Matres. And they still hold one asset which has not fallen into enemy hands: they have sandworms, the offspring of one giant worm that was rescued from Dune before its destruction. A desert was prepared for it on Chapter House, and its myriad tiny descendants are hard at work implementing the early stages of the cycle which will eventually turn the planet into another barren wasteland.

Once again Frank Herbert weaves a story of great complexity, as contending factions manoeuvre against each other for ascendancy, and great wheel of the dune saga makes another unexpected turn."

'Unique among SF novels . . . I know nothing comparable to it except The Lord of the Rings.' - Arthur C. Clarke

'One of the landmarks of modern science fiction . . . an amazing feat of creation.' - Analog
