Francoise Sagan THOSE WITHOUT SHADOWS First UK Edition

First UK edition first print hardback of THOSE WITHOUT SHADOWS by Francoise Sagan (translated by Irene Ash) and published by John Murray in 1957.

The book is in very good- condition (red cloth boards with white lettering to spine) with light bumping to the edges and staining to the page edges due to ageing. The book is in a good unclipped dust jacket which has light rubbing to the edges, creasing to the bottom front edge, a half inch tear to the bottom corner edge, fraying to the head of the spine and a couple of other small tears and chips. Back cover lightly soiled. Bookseller stamp to front endpaper. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.

In this novel the author of "Bonjour Tristesse" and "A Certain Smile" employs the third person to paint a vivid picture of a group of artistic and intellectual Parisians. We are made painfully aware of the weakness of their individual identities and the lack of purpose in their lives. Even the 'positive' ambition of Beatrice is merely to mimic others as an actress. As the characters drift despairingly into random affairs with one another, an ugly pall of dissatisfaction appears to envelop Paris.
