"Nick Sandman has one love of his life - his beautifully restored old sailing boat; and one dream - to take his boat out to sea where there are no rules, no fighting. The reality is a battered body, a wrecked boat, no money and no job.
A reluctant hero, winner of the VC in the Falklands, invalided out of the army with a disability pension, Nick discharges himself from hospital, barely able to walk. His father is in jail for fraud, his home and possessions impounded, his ex-wife is hounding him for maintenance. All he still owns is his boat, Sycorax. But when he reaches the Devon mooring, he finds the boat beached and wrecked and her place usurped by a glistening ocean-going yacht, Wildtrack. Everything seems owned by one man - the urbane, powerful television personality Tony Bannister.
The deal Nick is compelled to make may give him a chance to restore his boat, discover his enemy and realise his dream but draws him into a treacherous world far more dangerous even than ocean storms or Falkland beaches.
This is the first contemporary novel by Bernard Cornwell, the author of the acclaimed Richard Sharpe series. Wildtrack is a powerful novel of a man of honour, a man whose loyalties seem at odds with the modern world, a man forced to choose between the devil and te deep blue sea."
Bernard Cornwell has published five contemporary thrillers, the last of which was written in 1992. They all have sailing as a background.
