Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

From the dust jacket blurb:

In the summer of 1861 the armies of the north and south stood on the brink of American civil war. REBEL tells the story how a northern boy Nathaniel Starbuck, came to be fighting for the southern cause at the battle of Bull Run.

Estranged from his Boston family and jilted by the girl for whom he has abandoned his university studies, Starbuck is rescued by the quixotic Washington Faulconer, a rich landowner who is raising his own elite regiment to fight against the Yankees. Starbuck repays Faulconer's kindness by enlisting his Legion, even though the price of that enlistment could mean fighting against his own people.

Other men face similar dilemmas and all have a story to tell - from Faulconer's son Adam, wrestling with his conscience, to village schoolmaster Thaddeus Bird, the rake Ethan Ridley and the hardscrabble hill farmer Thomas Truslow, the only real soldier in the Faulconer Legion.

Starbuck's own wavering loyalties are confused by Truslow's captivating daughter Sally, but on the banks of the Bull Run all the dilemmas and all the confusions will be resolved by the shocking certainties of the battle which broke America in two.

In REBEL, the first novel in a series that will tell the story of Starbuck and the American Civil War, Bernard Cornwell displays the same unrivalled abilty to describe military action which made the books in his Sharpe series worldwide bestsellers.
