Limited edition facsimile reprint hardback of MARCHING THROUGH GEORGIA by Fenwick Yellowley Hedley (with Illustrations by F. L. Stoddard) and published by Hunnyhill Publications in 1998. Signed and dated by Elizabeth Hutchings (nee Hedley) on the limitation page. Number 158 of 250 copies printed.The book is in very good+ condition (blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with no significant wear to speak of apart from very light age spotting to page edges. The book is in a very good+ unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to the edges. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Pen pictures of everyday life in General Sherman's army, from the beginning of the Atlanta Campaign until the close of the civil war. The book does not pretend to be a tactical history of the campaigns of which it treats but rather an overview of the way soldiers lived, marched and fought on skirmish lines, plus more. Hedley, who was Adjutant in the Army of the Tennessee, kept a journal of the war. Giving tantalisingly few personal stories, he nevertheless makes the war spring to life with intimate detail of such topics as the games soldiers played between battles, their jokes and chat, strange scavenged food, a football match with the enemy in an apple orchard, with lyrical descriptions of river and mountain, all amidst the horrors of siege, bombardment and death. The book covers the siege of Atlanta and the burning of Colombia, as well as conjuring images of the famous leaders, Logan, Hood and Sherman himself.
