Erminio Bagnasco SUBMARINES OF WORLD WAR TWO First Edition

First UK edition, first print hardback of SUBMARINES OF WORLD WAR TWO by Erminio Bagnasco and published by Arms and Armour Press, London, in 1977. Originally published in Italian in 1973.

The book is in good condition (Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine with slight fading along the edges), with some light wear to the illustrated dust jacket which is not price clipped (slight creasing to the edges mainly at the top, a one inch closed tear together with slight peeling to one of the top spine corners and a finger nail tear to the other corner, a little moisture staining around the edges inside the jacket which is only slightly visible from outside, slight yellowing to the flaps inside and a creasing line across the top corner of the front flap). There is slight foxing to the first and last couple of pages and yellowing towards the page ends but nothing too drastic. Otherwise, internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Submarines of World War Two provides, for the first time in one fully-illustrated volume, accurate and comprehensive details of the 2,500 submarines of all nations that accounted for the sinking of more than 23 million tons of merchant shipping between 1939 and 1945. With over 500 photographs and line drawings, it presents an unrivalled illustrated encyclopedia of one of the great decisive weapons of the twentieth century.

Strategically employed on a large scale, submarines contributed decisively to the inter-continental war. The most spectacular and significant area of conflict was the North Atlantic, where a long struggle took place as Germany's U-boats threatened to strangle Great Britain's maritime communications. In the Pacific, the Japanese scored some notable successes against warships such as the sinking of the United States aircraft carrier Yorktown in June 1942 but American submarines achieved the decisive results, waging unrestricted warfare on Japan's highly-vulnerable communications, and practically wiping out her mercantile marine. In the Mediterranean, a hard-fought submarine war brought high losses to both sides and saw some exceptional sinkings, such as those of the British aircraft carrier Ark Royal and battleship Barham.

Another significant development of undersea warfare was the evolution of midget submarines and 'human torpedoes', which entered the war with startling effect: the British battleships Valiant and Queen Elizabeth were both badly damaged by Italian underwater assault craft: in September 1943, the German battleship Tirpitz was crippled in its fjord lair by British X Craft: and, in the Pacific, the Japanese began to operate their own miniature submersibles including Kaiten craft a sort of underwater kamikaze weapon.

Submarines of World War Two describes all of the classes and types of submarines employed by the combatant nations during the war from midgets to large U-cruisers and includes also the projected and experimental designs. For each class of submarine, the principal technical characteristics are presented: construction, displacement, dimensions, speed, range, operational depth, fuel load, armament and complement, together with a brief history of the submarine's wartime career, and the fate of each member of the class.

Written by one of Italy's foremost naval authors. Submarines of World War Two enables the reader to compare the performance, appearance and characteristics of all the submarines that took part in the Second World War. Also included is a brief outline of the evolution of the submarine and submarine warfare including the interplay of wartime experience, design improvement and tactical innovation placing the subject in its true historical perspective."
