First edition first print hardback of PEGGY ASHCROFT (An illustrated study of her work, with a list of her appearances on stage and screen) by Eric Keown and published by Rockliff Publishing Corporation in 1955. The Frontispiece portrait page of Peggy Ashcroft is signed by her (when she was in Liverpool in the RSC production of Ghosts at the Royal Court Theatre).The front endpapers have been used to collect autographs by the following actors:
Jack Gwillim, Anthony Quayle, Llewellyn Rees (probably when appearing in the play The Right Honourable Gentleman which ran in the West End in the mid-1960s) and...
on the half title page autographs by members of the casts of the 1967 RSC On Tour productions of Ghosts and As You Like It at the Royal Court Theatre Liverpool:
Robert Wilcox, Richard Khan, Rufus Frampton, Dorothy Tutin, Alan Howard, Michael Williams, Chloe Ashcroft, Roy Kinnear, Janet Suzman and David Waller.
The book is in very good condition (green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light bumping to the bottom corner of the front board, light creasing to the bottom edge of the back board and top and bottom of the spine. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket (protected in an archival sleeve) which has very light rubbing to the bottom of the front and back covers and top and bottom of the spine. Internally both endpapers have some age browning, but the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
It is impossible to discuss the modern English stage without introducing the name of Peggy Ashcroft, and yet no account has previously been written of her long and dazzling career. This serious gap in the theatre bookshelf has now been repaired by Eric Keown, dramatic critic of Punch. In a careful study of her outstanding achievements he traces the development of her special gifts, and shows what a rich variety she has to offer.
