First edition, first print hardback of SAILING: A COURSE OF MY LIFE, by Edward (Ted) Heath and published by Sidgwick & Jackson in 1975. Signed and inscribed by Heath on the inside front board.

The book is in very good condition (slightly faded edges but otherwise clean blue boards and bright gold lettering on spine) with minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to edges and spine, bumping to corners, otherwise clean and intact). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.

This is Edward Heath's sailing autobiography, his own account of the challenges and joys he has experienced in a demanding sport. This is a revealing book, not only about the world of sailing but about Ted Heath himself - for he is frank about his personal reactions not only to triumph but to disappointment and tragedy. It is also an autobiography with a difference, for through it Mr Heath imparts the knowledge and skills he has acquired in both large and small boats.

Edward Heath is one of Britain's most successful and accomplished yachtsmen. It was only in 1966, at the age of 50, that he first took sailing lessons. Three years later he had won one of the world's toughest ocean races, the Sydney to Hobart, defeating 78 other yachts, setting up three new records, and taking British ocean racing out of the doldrums. After this, he gained many successes and honours including the captaincy in 1971 of Britain's winning Admiral's Cup team.

This book will appeal to all those who sail, to beginners and to experts, to small boat owners and to ocean racers. There are accounts of Mr Heath's early experiences; how he graduated from the 16-foot Foreland class, through a Snipe and a Fireball, to the famous ocean racers Morning Cloud. He writes about his races and racing techniques; provides many sailing anecdotes together with accounts of life aboard his yachts; and also gives his advice and views on sailing in general.

185 pages, including index and profusely illustrated with colour and black & white photographs.
