The book is in near fine condition (red cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and very light age tanning to the pages. The book is in a near fine unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to the edges of both covers and spine. Internally the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

This book is about an Irish boy and his English hero. It is about the inspiration and joy a young boy found in Gordon Banks, arguably the greatest goalkeeper of all times. The story begins with England's famous 1966 World Cup victory over West Germany - the first live game of soccer the boy watched. The boy's love affair with the beautiful game traverses the various stages of the first decade of the Northern Ireland conflict. Juxtaposed alongside eachother are the twin tracks of normal people attempting to do normal things in an increasingly abnormal situation. The boy's fantasy world runs in parallel with an often fierce and frightening political reality.

Soccer enthusiasts and social scientists alike will find this a fascinating book. And a wonderful tribute to one of the games most decent players.
