First edition first print hardback of RAT RACE by Dick Francis and published by Michael Joseph Ltd in 1970. Signed (with best wishes) by Francis on the front endpaper. Also signed and dated by previous owner above author's signature.The book is in very good condition (green cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with light general wear (bit of rubbing to the bottom corner of the front board). The book is in a very good- dust jacket (protected in an archival sleeve) which is not price clipped and has some light wear (tiny chips to top of spine and some slight rubbing to edges). Still very presentable. Internally the pages are generally clean and tight with no tears or other inscriptions, and there are no more than the odd age-related stain. There is the very slightest spinal lean which is hardly noticeable.
Matt Shore, flying for a small air-taxi charter firm, took five passengers on a routine flight to the races - two jockeys, a trainer, an owner and a friend. At afternoon's end, he flew them off homewards, discussing the successes and disasters of their day.
