Derek Dougan THE SASH HE NEVER WORE Signed Hardback

First print of this edition hardback of THE SASH HE NEVER WORE... TWENTY FIVE YEARS ON, by Derek Dougan and published by Lagan Books and All Seasons Publishing, N. Ireland in 1997. Signed, inscribed and dated by Dougan on the title page.

The book is in very good condition (Clean green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine) with minor shelf wear to the dust jacket which is not price clipped. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. There is slight yellowing to the pages.

In 18 years in the English League, Dougan scored 294 goals in 685 matches, including 95 in 258 for Wolves. He began his career as a wing-half/ central defender before being converted to a centre-forward. During his career, Dougan scored hat-tricks in the First Division, the Second Division, the Third Division, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Cup and scored more English League goals than any other Irishman.

He served as chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association from 1970 to 1978 and was instrumental in the establishment of players' rights and free agency. Dougan believed passionately that players should control their own destiny and used his position as Chairman of the PFA to further players' rights. Many of football's modern elite have benefitted from Dougan's passionate perseverance of this issue and this may well be reflected upon as his lasting, albeit controversial, legacy. Dougan was an advocate of an All-Ireland soccer team.

He wrote several books, including the autobiographical The Sash He Never Wore (1972) and the novel The Footballer (1974). Dougan also wrote column pieces for newspapers.

On 24 June 2007, Dougan died at age 69 from a heart attack.

"This book is about a man with a mission. derek Dougan is his name, a windmill of a man whose sheer talent and swirling personality have left their mark on the modern game of soccer in the United kingdom, and Europe. Dougan remains a man of vision in spite of the obstacles that have managed to get in the way of his unending quest for footballing excellence on the island of Ireland, a bringing together of footballing athletes North and South to create an all-Ireland team which Derek Dougan is convinced could take on the world and give them a run for their money.

It's a big dream and an even bigger challenge to those who over the years, have set their faces against that kind of footballing unity. The politics of the island itself, the politics of the sport, the pure ugly desire to hold on to power have all got in the way of a sporting unity which has already occured in rugby, hockey, and most other sports.

But could there be a difference with courage and leadership coming from the top of soccer on both sides of the Irish border? Could a coming together in this great sport of the masses have contributed to the masses working and playing together, rather than killing each other during the twenty-five and more years of Northern Ireland's agony... who can say?

The Dougan quest continues. He brings to it all the enthusiasm and dedication that made him the 'saint' of Wolverhampton, where he played for over eight years. It was a dedication that led him to take on the Establishment on behalf of the Professional Footballers Association (the P.F.A.) which led to a three year crusade for a better deal for Britain's Professional Footballers. His work in that field is amply documented as a job well done but his present work, perhaps his most important work, is just beginning."
