The Normans were a phenomenon in the Europe of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. In the whole course of European history there have been few movements more remarkable than the sudden expansion of Norman power during this period. They conquered England, extended their dominions in Italy and Sicily, carried their interests into Spain, sided with the papacy at a critical period in the history of Christendom, embedded themselves in the politics of Byzantium and played a special role in the First Crusade.
