Clive James THE CRYSTAL BUCKET First Edition Signed

First edition first print hardback of THE CRYSTAL BUCKET: Television Criticism from the Observer 1976-79 by Clive James and published by Jonathan Cape in 1981. Signed, dated and inscribed to a previous owner by James on the front endpaper. Very uncommon signed.

The book is in near fine condition (black cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with no significant wear. Blue top page edges. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to the edges. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

This book is a second selection from Clive James's weekly television column, which was required Sunday reading for over a million people in Britain and had avid followers even in the foreign countries where few of the programmes Mr James writes about are ever screened. But it's the way he writes about them that makes his column one of the most admired regular features in journalism, earning him, among other awards, the titles of IPC Critic of the Year and Philips Television Critic of the Year.

This second volume, covering the years 1976 to 1979, once again reveals his determination to deal not just with the big moments in television but with the small change - of fumbling link men, frenzied commentators, the unfulfilled pretensions and the unexpected felicities that most critics miss but the viewing public is fascinated by.
