Information
First edition second impression hardback of OFFICIAL SECRET (The Remarkable Story of Escape Aids - Their Invention, Production - And The Sequel) by Clayton Hutton and published by Max Parrish in 1960 (same year as the first impression). Signed, dated and inscribed to a previous owner by Hutton on the front endpaper. Very uncommon signed.

The book is in very good- condition (black cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with colour fading to boards, light age spotting to page edges and to front and rear endpapers. The book is in a fair unclipped dust jacket which has a large open tear to the spine, two closed tears to the front cover, sundry other short tears and nicks and light age spotting to the inner and outer covers. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no other inscriptions.

Major Clayton Hutton's wartime job was a strange and secret one. For his was the brain behind the invention, design and production of those ingenious escape aids that became so familiar to the allied forces, and particularly to the RAF: silk maps of every country in Western Europe; fountain pens, match boxes and buttons containing compasses; flying boots with tops that could be ripped off to make a waistcoat, leaving a non-military pair of shoes and many others.

It is an excellent story - exciting, audacious and often highly amusing. But its sequel is another adventure story in itself: nothing less than a running battle between the author and the security authorities, who tried to ban the publication of this book, only to suddenly withdraw their case.
