Clare Francis, 5' 2" in height and weighing only 7 and a half stone, was the first British girl to take part in the Observer Royal Western Singlehanded Transatlantic Race. Despite the fact that this race was the hardest in terms of weather, that it boasted a record number of competitors, that it claimed fatalities for the first time and that one third of the boats had to drop out, Clare, in her 38-foot boat, Robertson's Golly, succeeded in beating the French-held women's record by completing the course in 29 days and was the first British competitor in a conventional boat to finish.
