Author, journalist and politician Chris Mullin is a British Labour Party politician and diarist who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunderland South from 1987 to 2010. He chaired the Home Affairs Select Committee and served in three departments. He is the author of the bestselling novel A Very British Coup, re-published by Serpent's Tail, which was turned into an award-winning television series. His other published works include three widely acclaimed volumes of diaries -- A Walk-On Part, A View from the Foothills and Decline & Fall.
Author of three novels, including the classic political thriller, A Very British Coup, the television version of which won BAFTA and Emmy awards and was shown in more than 30 countries. Also, Error of Judgement - the truth about the Birmingham Bombings which led to the correction of one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British legal history; made into a drama documentary by Granada Television in which Chris Mullin was played by John Hurt.
A View from the Foothills is a volume of diaries published to widespread acclaim. Alan Clarke meets Yes Minister in this wry and self-deprecating diary about life in the New Labour Government from 1999 to 2007.
"'It is said that failed politicians make the best diarists. In which case I am in with a chance.'
Witty, incisive, and highly entertaining, Chris Mullin's diaries describe an unusual political career. To the apoplexy of the Labour whips, he was for a time the only person to have been appointed to government despite having voted against the Iraq war.
Through his career he has occupied several vantage points. He was a member of the backbench parliamentary committee which met weekly with the prime minister during the build-up to the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. He twice served as chairman of the Home Affairs committee and was a minister in three departments - Environment, International Development and the Foreign Office. With an eye for detail and a keen sense of the ridiculous these diaries are an irreverent snapshot of political life in the early twenty-first century.
As a diarist Chris Mullin ranks with the best. If you enjoyed Yes, Minister or Alan Clark's diaries, you will love these. A View from the Foothills is certain to delight and amuse far beyond the political classes."
'The most wickedly indiscreet and elegant memoirs since those of Alan Clark' - Mail on Sunday
