Third edition, first print hardback of THE SILENT TRAVELLER IN OXFORD by Chiang Yee and published by Methuen & Co. Ltd in 1946. Signed 'With Best Wishes' by Yee (in both English and Chinese) on the title page. Ex Libris plate attached to the front pastedown and a previous owner's initials and date in the bottom corner of the title pageThe book is in good+ condition (yellow cloth boards with red lettering to spine and front) with some light yellowing to the boards and spine and light creasing to the top and bottom of the spine. The page edges are lightly age spotted. The book is in a good clipped dust jacket that has light age spotting, light rubbing and creasing to the top and bottom of the spine and a tiny closed tear to the bottom of the back cover. Internally, the pages have light yellowing and age spotting but are tight and there are no tears.
After arriving in Oxford as a refugee from the London Blitz where his lodgings were destroyed, Chiang Yee documents his experiences over five years in the city with which he has an affectionate regard. Yee describes his encounters with the locals and records the atmosphere, sites, rituals and traditions of Oxford. This is the fifth installment in the hugely successful Silent Traveller series.
