First edition first print hardback of A WEB OF DECEPTION: The Spycatcher Affair by Chapman Pincher and published by Sidgwick & Jackson Limited in 1987. Signed by Pincher on the half title page.

The book is in very good condition (black cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light creasing to the top edge of the spine and a small indentation to the top edges of both boards. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to the top of the front inner flap, spine and back cover along with some small marks on the front cover close to the spine. There is a 'Signed Copy' sticker on the front cover. Internally there is some very light yellowing to the edges of the pages but they are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

The British Government's long legal battle to prevent the former Ml5 officer, Peter Wright, from publishing his memoirs caused an international furore. There are those who see the Government as a repressive machine trying to prevent a poor old patriot from exposing dreadful scandals. Others see Wright as a vindictive and treacherous old man taking revenge on Ml5 by selling secrets he had sworn to keep. The one person who knows where the real truth lies is Chapman Pincher. It was his meeting with Wright in 1980 which started what has become known as the Spycatcher affair. He was the first person to whom Wright leaked secrets and Chapman Pincher's book, Their Trade Is Treachery, has been central to the court cases in Australia.

A Web of Deception contains more secrets than Spycatcher (which was largely a re-run of Their Trade Is Treachery): it shows how the highest in the land can become entrapped, with their reputations sullied, by the dangerous cult of official secrecy.
