Brian Herbert - the elder son of science fiction author Frank Herbert - is most famous for his collaborations with author Kevin J. Anderson, with whom he has written multiple prequels to his father's landmark 1965 science fiction novel, Dune, all of which have made the New York Times Best Seller list. The duo began with the trilogies Prelude to Dune (19992001) and Legends of Dune (20022004). Brian and Anderson next published Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007), two sequels to Frank Herbert's original Dune series which was left incomplete after his 1986 death.
Legends of Dune 2 - The Machine Crusade is set in the fictional Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. It is the second book in the Legends of Dune prequel trilogy, which takes place over 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's celebrated 1965 novel Dune. The series chronicles the fictional 'Butlerian Jihad', a crusade by the last free humans in the universe against the thinking machines, a violent and dominating force led by the sentient computer mind 'Omnius'.
"The first battle was a victory. But the war is just beginning . . .
Earth is a radioactive ruin. But the initial campaign of the Butlerian Jihad has given new hope to mankind. Where once all-powerful machines ruled, unchallenged except in a few beleaguered worlds, now a new era has begun. Serena Butler, whose murdered child has become a symbol for oppressed humanity, inspires a war against the thinking computers led by her brilliant generals Xavier Harkonnen and Vorian Atreides.
But four of the Titans - murderous machines with human brains and human cunning - still remain, and they seek a new way to challenge both humans and computers. And the universal computer mind, Omnius, still wields most of its power.
In this unstable landscape where brutal massacres alternate with short-lived victories, come two new factors.
From the depths of space and time, a free Titan - the near-legendary Hecate - joins forces with humanity. And in a humble laboratory on the planet Poritrin, the mathematical genius Norma Cenva is perfecting a theory that will utterly transform the rules of space travel.
DUNE, winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards, is the best-selling science fiction novel of all time, with nearly fifteen million copies in print. In the LEGENDS OF DUNE sequence, the bestselling authors of PRELUDE TO DUNE have turned to a new and pivotal epoch in the history of the DUNE universe to tell the story most eagerly anticipated by its readers."
