First edition first print hardback of NOTES FROM A BIG COUNTRY by Bill Bryson and published by Doubleday in 1998. Signed by Bryson on the title page.
The book is in near fine condition (black cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with no significant wear apart from some age tanning around the page edges. The book is in a near fine unclipped dust jacket which has no wear to speak of. Internally the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Bill Bryson has the rare knack of being out of his depth wherever he goes - even (perhaps especially)in the land of his birth. This became all too apparent when, after nearly two decades in England, the world's best-loved travel writer upped sticks with Mrs Bryson, little Jimmy et al. and returned to live in the country he had left as a youth. When an old friend asked to write a weekly dispatch from New Hampshire, Bill firmly turned him down. So firm was he in fact that gathered here is eighteen months' worth of his popular columns about that strangest of phenomena - the American way of life.
318 pages including illustrations by Alan Baker
