First edition first print hardback of MY PHILOSOPHICAL DEVELOPMENT by Bertrand Russell and published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd in 1959.

The book is in very good condition (purple cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with light rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards and top and bottom of the spine as well as light age tanning to the page edges. Red top page edges. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing and rubbing to the top and bottom of the front and back covers and spine (which also has some light colour fading). There is heavier rubbing to the edges of the back cover along with light browning with age. Internally the pages have lightly yellowed but are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.

In this book Bertrand Russell gives an account of his philosophical development from crude adolescent attempts at the age of 15 down to the present day. He tells of his Hegelian period during the years 1894-8, and includes hitherto unpublished notes for a Hegelian philosophy of science. He deals next with the two-fold revolution involved in his abandonment of idealism and adoption of a mathematical logic founded upon that of Peano. After two chapters on Principia Mathematica, he passes to the problems of perception as dealt with in Our Knowledge of the External World, and continues on to several other examinations, notes and explanations, concluding with a reprint of some articles on modern Oxford philosophy.

Such a survey as this, by one of the world's leading thinkers, of nearly seventy years of his own philosophical work, is clearly as important as it is fascinating. It is a masterpiece of philosophical autobiography.
