First edition, first print hardback of TAKING SIDES, by Bernard Levin and published by Jonathan Cape Ltd., London in 1979. Signed and inscribed by Levin on the title page.The book is in very good condition (Clean black boards with gilt lettering on spine) with only slight wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (minor creasing to the edges, light fading to the spine and slight tanning along the edges inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.
Henry Bernard Levin CBE (1928 2004) was an English journalist, author and broadcaster, described by The Times as "the most famous journalist of his day". Levin reviewed television for The Manchester Guardian and wrote a weekly political column in The Spectator noted for its irreverence. During the 1960s he wrote five columns a week for The Daily Mail on any subject that he chose. In 1970, Levin moved to The Times where, with one break of just over a year in 198182, he remained as resident columnist until his retirement, covering a wide range of topics, both serious and comic. Levin became a well-known broadcaster, first on the weekly satirical television show That Was The Week That Was in the early 1960s, then as a panellist on a musical quiz, Face the Music, and finally in three series of travel programmes in the 1980s.
He began to write books in the 1970s, publishing 17 between 1970 and 1998. He wrote several books, some of them about one of his consuming passions, travel, including Hannibal's Footsteps and To the End of the Rhine, and A Walk Up Fifth Avenue which were made into television series. He also wrote The Pendulum Years, Taking Sides, Speaking Up, The Way We Live Now, A World Elsewhere, and Enthusiasms, a collection of essays on subjects from Vermeer to walking sticks, and cats to opera. He published half a dozen collections of journalism. Levin was appointed CBE for services to journalism in 1990.
Bernard Levin has at last agreed to publish a collection of his celebrated pieces from The Times together with several of his incomparable book reviews from the Observer, though to do so meant breaking his self-imposed canon to dispose of things as soon as they have served an immediate purpose. However many sleepless nights this act of preservation may cause the author, no other journalist can have an audience more anxious to keep, re-read, argue over and quote his opinions than Bernard Levin - or be more deserving of such appreciation.
