Barbara Trapido was born and educated in South Africa and moved to London in 1963. Barbara grew up the child of liberal parents who were anti-racist and intellectually elitist. She acquired a degree in English Literature and now lives in Oxford with her family.

Trapido has published six novels, three of which have been nominated for the Whitbread Prize. Her first novel, Brother of the More Famous Jack, one of the most highly acclaimed first novels of the eighties, was awarded a special prize for fiction at the Whitbread Awards in 1982; her second novel was Noahs Ark, published in 1985; while her third, Temples of Delight, to which Juggling, published in 1994, is a sequel, was shortlisted for the 1990 Sunday Express Book of the Year Award.

Her following books are The Travelling Hornplayer and her semi autobiographical Frankie and Stankie which was shortlisted for the 1998 Whitbread Novel Award and longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Her latest novel Sex & Stravinsky was published in 2010.

"'There had seemed to be such prospects for them; such a perfect and symmetry. Two of them dark; two of them fair. Two short; two tall. Two of them ebullient and two of them grave. Like the stuff of Shakespeare Comedy.'

Christina and Pam are sisters less than a year apart in age. Pam is tall and black-haired with heavy dark brows and olive skin. Christina is small and fair - and stubborn. Pam is, in fact, the adopted child of Christina's austere mother and extravagant father. They are brought up in an opulent New York apartment until they are sent to an English boarding school where they meet two boys, Peter and Jago.

Peter is fair and strangely weightless with no father; Jago is dark and forceful with no mother. Inevitably the strains of adolescent desire wreak havoc amongst these four: Christina razors her hair, paints her eyes and takes to a nose stud in order to attract Jago, while Jago finds himself thinking more and more of the conventional and quite Pam...

As the years pass, their paths diverge and converge in strange and unexpected ways. Barbara Trapido explores their relationships with a perception and subtlety that delicately reflects the Shakespearean comic tradition with its lightness and balance, coincidence and risk, its cruelty, its wit and its penchant for eleventh-hour exits and entrances.

The result is a novel of exquisite humour written with a perfect elegance and sureness of touch. Resonant and moving, this, Barbara Trapido's fourth novel, is her finest yet."

'A brilliant book' Mary Wesley, Daily Mail

'She wraps up all the golden threads with dazzling wit ... Think Measure for Measure here and a touch of The Tempest there ... Trapido's pen drips with sensuousness and sexuality' The Times

'She is simply dynamite' Philip Hensher, Guardian

'A work of enormous charm, highly entertaining and told with a deft touch, which handles serious matters lightly and treats light ones with proper respect' Michael Dibdin, Independent on Sunday
