Barbara Fischman Traub THE MATRUSHKA DOLL First Edition

First US edition, first print hardback of THE MATRUSHKA DOLL, by Barbara Fischman Traub and published by Richard Marek Publishers, New York in 1979.

The book is in very good condition (clean quarter bound green boards and gold lettering on spine which has minor fading to the edges) with slight wear to the dust jacket which is not price clipped (minor creasing to the edges, more around the spine edges, slight yellowing towards the bottom of the spine and a folding crease across the top corner to the back inside flap). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

"Beginning with the liberation of Hitler's death camps, and ending one year later in May 1946 with the descent of the Iron Curtain over Eastern Europe, The Matrushka Doll focuses on an aspect hitherto unexplored in the literature of the Holocaust - coming home.

Lisa Engler is among a handful of Jewish survivors who return to Sighet, their native town in Transylvania, hoping to find comfort in the familiar surroundings of home, as if "touching familiar contours" would ease their pain. Instead, they find their houses plundered and their Gentile neighbors sorry to see them alive. With their families dead and their houses destroyed they have nothing left but their anguish; nightly they numb themselves with rage, with fantasy, with drink.

As artfully crafted as it is affecting, The Matrushka Doll cannot fail to touch the hearts of its readers."

487 pages.
