"Days of peace turn to days of terror for a young boy caught in the tensions of revolutionary times. Set in 1917 and the years following, Days of Terror has as its climax the epic story of a mass exodus of Mennonites to Canada and the United States, away from the horrors of anarchy, famine and the Russian revolution.

The tranquillity of daily life in a small Ukrainian village is disrupted for Peter and Katya Neufeld when their older brother Otto returns to the family stronghold - their ancient farmhouse - from the war against Germany.

A terrifying sequence of events begins: the Neufelds must struggles against invading bandits and against the onset of disease and hunger. They are also shaken by the loss of freedom to practise their religion and by the knowledge that Otto has defied Mennonite beliefs by taking up arms to fight in the Civil War.

Miraculously, and after much suffering, those who are strong enough are offered a passage to North America. There is the chance of a farm in Manitoba. Yet friends and relatives must be left behind and there are still many trials to endure...

Full of the joys and pains of life, this is a story with the power to touch the reader and make the Neufelds' experience our own. Barbara Smucker has again recreated a dramatic period of history with vigour and authenticity."
