The book is in very good condition for its age (cream boards with red lettering to front and spine) with no more than light general wear. The book is in a good unclipped dust jacket which is protected in an archival sleeve and has some rubbing to edges, fingernail closed tear to the rear top edge and a small piece missing from the top edge of the front cover. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.

This book presents 116 species that are mostly common, widely distributed and fairly conspicuous. In the main, only those recognized with the naked eye or with a simple lens have been included. There are 64 accompanying plates, 32 of which are in full colour. The author has provided a classified list of classes, orders, genera and species included in the work.
