Arthur Bryant THE STORY OF ENGLAND First Edition 1953 Signed
First edition first print hardback of THE STORY OF ENGLAND (Makers of the Realm) by Arthur Bryant and published by Collins in 1953. Signed with a short inscription to a previous owner by Bryant on the title page. The book is in good+ condition (green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light bumping to the bottom corner of the front board and light creasing to the top and bottom of the spine which also has light colour fading. The page edges are age tanned, the bottom page edges are rough cut. The book is in a good+ unclipped dust jacket which is age toned and creased, with a thumbnail closed tear to the front top corner but is otherwise intact, the colours still vibrant and the text still sharp. Internally the pages are lightly yellowed with occasional light browning but are otherwise tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
In all his books Arthur Bryant's love for England is happily and strongly apparent. It was therefore likely that at some stage he should feel challenged to tell "the story of England" from its earliest days. This is the great task that in 1950 he embarked upon and that he planned to complete in three volumes, of which this is the first. Looking back in his Prelude from the world of today, it carries him from the beginning - far back in the mists of geological time - to the start of the fourteenth century and the splendid achievements of Edward I. In it the nation is made, its peoples - the descendants of England's many invaders - blended into one, and its basic institutions created.
