Arthur Bryant THE GREAT DUKE First Edition Signed

First edition first print hardback of THE GREAT DUKE (Or The Invincible General) by Arthur Bryant and published by William Collins Sons & Co Ltd in 1971. Signed with an inscription to a previous owner by Bryant on the title page.

The book is in very good condition (grey cloth boards with gilt lettering to a red plate on the spine spine) with light creasing to the top of the spine and light yellowing to the page edges. The book is in a good unclipped dust jacket which has curling to the top of the front cover, creasing to the bottom of the front cover and top and bottom of the spine and back cover, light browning to the top edges of both covers and to the spine as well as two one-inch closed tears to the top of the front cover and one to the top of the back cover. Internally the pages are lightly yellowed but otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

Following up his work on the life of Nelson published the previous year, Arthur Bryant returned to the biographical field in which he first made his name and has written an enthralling narrative on Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, which is equal in scholarship, breadth of vision and depth of human sympathy to his earlier biographies of Charles II and Pepys.

492 pages including Abbreviations and Index.
