Armistead Maupin is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He served as a naval officer in the Mediterranean and with the River Patrol Force in Vietnam. Maupin worked briefly as a reporter for a newspaper in South Carolina, before being assigned to the San Francisco bureau of the Associated Press in 1971. The climate of freedom and tolerance he found in his adopted city inspired him to come out publicly as homosexual in 1974. Two years later, he launched his 'Tales of the City' serial in the San Francisco Chronicle, the first fiction to appear in an American daily for decades.
Maupin is the author of nine novels, including the six-volume Tales of the City series, Maybe the Moon, The Night Listener and, most recently, Michael Tolliver Lives. Three miniseries starring Olympia Dukakis and Laura Linney were made from the first three novels in the Tales series. The Night Listener became a feature film starring Robin Williams and Toni Collette.
Significant Others is the fifth book in the Tales of the City series. It originally was serialized in the San Francisco Examiner.
"How many writers have found themselves compared with Dickens, Proust, P. G. Wodehouse, Anthony Powell, Rabelais, Tom Wolfe, Evelyn Waugh... and yet still have a style that is delightfully, addictively their own? This distinction is Armistead Maupin's for his hilarious and bittersweet novels of San Francisco life - novels which have earned him devoted fans on both sides of the Atlantic (and the Pacific).
Significant Others, the latest self-contained chronicle in the 'Tales of the City' saga, is a cunningly observed class comedy that's sure to be relished by the cognoscenti and by new readers alike. A holiday in the redwoods goes uproariously awry when the opposing sexes camp out rather too close to each other for comfort. Among those entangled in the mayhem are DeDe Halcyon, reformed debutante, troubled househusband Brian Hawkins, and the irrepressible Michael 'Mouse' Tolliver (arguably Maupin's most beloved creation).
With its mordant yet compassionate understanding of modern love in its many varities. Significant Others is Armistead Maupin at his finest."
