Information
First edition, first print hardback of FLAME IN THE DARK: Poems, by Anthony Naumann and published by Collins Clear-Type Press Ltd., London, in 1962. Presumed signed by Naumann on the dedication page.

The book is in very good condition (Clean green cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine) with very slight wear to the paper dust jacket which is not price clipped (light creasing to the edges, some rubbing to spine edges and to the corners, slight tanning inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. There is minor tanning to the pages and more on the endpapers.

Anthony Naumann spent his childhood in the Surrey countryside, and was educated at Malvern College, where he was when war broke out. After a short spell of teaching he joined the Rifle Brigade, served with the 6th Armoured Division and in 1942 went abroad with an advance section of the First Army attempting to seize Tunis. During this thrust he was blinded and severely wounded in the arm. He found himself at St Dunstan's, where he learned braille and to type one-handed. He spent much of his time on poetry.

Flame in The dark is Anthony Naumann's first published collection of poems. Subsequently two further volumes came, If I may share (1964) and Now has my summer (1966). Now has my summer was chosen 'Poetry book of the year' by the literary magazine Manifold.

"To the natural poet blindness seems to bring a hightened sensibility and a peculiarly concentrated vision of the world. Of this Homer and Milton are, of course, the supreme examples. Anthony Naumann is a poet to whom poetry is the most natural form of expression. His poems reflect ordinary experience-experience which, through the power and beauty of his imaginary achieves a rare poetic intensity.

All is grist to his mill, and his work is written in language so clear and direct as to place them in the centre of everyday life. This collection offers a penetrating and moving awareness of the joy of living, a joy which often eludes those of us who can see.

Anthony Naumann was blinded in North Africa while serving with the First Army. he then trained at St. Dunstans where he learned the braille in which Flame in The dark was written"
