First edition, first print hardback of BATTLEDRESS BEDBLOCKS AND BASHAS The Random Jottings of a Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer National Service Subaltern 1958- 1960, by Anthony Caffyn. Published by Owlers Books, Sussex, in 2006. Signed and dated by Caffyn on the half title page.
The book is in very good condition (Clean black cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine) with only minor wear to the pictorial dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to the edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.
A 'warts and all' account of National Service, of a REME craftsman in the UK and Malaya in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Soldiers will readily recognise and chuckle at the wickedly accurate portraits of army drill instructors and the pithy badinage that passes for barrack room humour.
There have been reports in the National Press that there has been concern in the MoD that the reduction of the Officer Cadet Course at the RMA Sandhurst from two years down to one, may have resulted in insufficient training being given to newly commissioned subalterns, in the care of the troops under their command, especially in a combat situation...
