Anthony Babington THE ENGLISH BASTILLE First Edition

First edition first print hardback of THE ENGLISH BASTILLE by Anthony Babington (with a Foreword by The RT. HON. James Callaghan, M.P.) and published by Macdonald and Co Ltd in 1971.

The book is in very good+ condition (black cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with no significant wear. The book is in a very good- unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing and rubbing to the edges and a small patch of surface loss to the back cover, probably due to the removal of a sticker. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.

The English Bastille is Newgate Gaol - the most dreaded and most sinister of prisons, not only because of its close association with the gallows at Tyburn and the whole gruesome ritual of public execution, but also on account of the brutal treatment accorded to its inmates and the atmosphere of filth, squalor, depravity and disease in which they were forced to live.

250 pages including Illustrations, Acknowledgements, Bibliography and Index
