Anne Inez McCaffrey (1926-2011) was an American-born Irish writer, best known for her 'Dragonriders of Pern' series. Over the course of her 46 year career she won a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award. Her book The White Dragon became one of the first science fiction novels ever to land on the New York Times Best Seller List.
McCaffrey's first novel was Restoree, published by Ballantine Books in 1967. Unlike most science fiction books of the era, Restoree's heroine is a strong willed, intelligent woman who is willing and able to think for herself and act on her own initiative. McCaffrey was widely quoted as saying that Restoree was intended as a "jab" at how women were usually portrayed in science fiction. Decision at Doona was Anne McCaffrey's third book and the first book of the Doona Series
In Decision at Doona, still emphasising her versatility, Anne McCaffrey describes a future overpopulated earth in which the only - slim - hope is to be sent to one of the newly discovered colony worlds. But after one catastrophe when attempts had been made to populate a planet with an indigenous life form the regulations forbade, completely and utterly, any landing on an aliens' planet or any meeting by colonists with non-humans.
Out of the billions stacked in the warrens of Earth came a shipload of new colonials, free at last to make a world of their choice, free to let their kids run and shout. Doona was the new home of these rebellious colonials - only rebels went - and what did they do when confronted with regulations unwittingly broken? What was to be their decision?
